Pancakes Around the World

Happy Pancake Day! Today is the perfect chance to enjoy some delicious pancakes, but why not try something different this year? Pancakes come in all shapes and flavours from different cultures and countries. From French crêpes to Japanese soufflé pancakes. We’ve created a list of some of our favourite pancake recipes from around the world for you to try!

French Crêpes (France)

First up we have some delicious, delicate and thin crêpes that are perfect for a sweet or savoury filling.

Ingredients

250g plain flour

500ml milk

2 eggs

30g melted butter

5g sugar

A pinch of salt

Instructions

Whisk together the eggs and milk, while slowly adding in the flour.

Add the melted butter, sugar and salt and mix until smooth.

Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat and lightly grease with butter.

Pour a thin layer of batter, tilting the pan to spread evenly.

Cook for about 1 minute on each side until golden.

Serve with sugar and lemon, Nutella, or ham and cheese for a savoury flavour.

Japanese Soufflé Pancakes (Japan)

Next up, are these delicious Japanese ultra-fluffy pancakes that are like eating clouds thanks to their airy texture.

Ingredients

100g plain flour

3 eggs (separated)

30g sugar

5ml vanilla extract

A pinch of salt

Instructions

Whisk egg yolks, milk and vanilla together.

Sift in flour, baking powder, and salt, then mix until smooth.

In a separate bowl, whisk egg whites until foamy, and then gradually add sugar whisking to stiff peaks.

Gently fold egg whites into the batter in batches.

Heat a pan on low and lightly grease with butter. Pour the batter into moulds or stack spoonful’s high.

Cover and cook for 5 minutes per side until golden and fluffy.

Serve with syrup, berries or whipped cream.

Dutch Pancakes (Netherlands)

Next up we have traditional Dutch mini pancakes, also known as “poffertjes”. These bite size pieces are the perfect way to enjoy a sweet treat this pancake day.

Ingredients

60g all-purpose flour

120ml whole milk

2 large eggs

1 tbsp sugar

½ tsp vanilla extract

¼ tsp salt

1 tbsp melted butter

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 220°C. Place a mini muffin tin inside the oven to heat up.

In a blender, combine flour, milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla, salt and melted butter. Blend until smooth and let the batter rest for 5-10 minutes.

Carefully remove the hot muffin tin from the oven and grease each cup with butter.

Fill each cup about halfway with batter.

Bake for 12-15 minutes or until puffed up and golden brown.

Serve immediately with your favourite topping whether that be powdered sugar, fresh berries or chocolate syrup!

American Pancakes (America)

Lastly, we have the classic fluffy and thick American pancakes. These can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch or dinner! These diner-style pancakes are loved worldwide.

Ingredients

250g plain flour

250ml milk

2 eggs

10g baking powder

30g sugar

5ml vanilla extract

A pinch of salt

30g melted butter

Instructions

Whisk eggs, milk, and vanilla together.

Sift in the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt, then mix to combine.

Stir in the melted butter.

Heat a pan over medium heat and lightly grease it.

Pour batter into the pan, cooking for 2-3 minutes until bubbles form.

Flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes until golden brown.

Serve with maple syrup, butter, or fruit.

With so many unique pancake styles from around the world, there’s no reason to stick to just one.
