Celebrating Mothers and Mothering Figures

The 15th March celebrates Mother’s Day, a day for appreciating mothers and motherly figures in our lives. There are so many ways to celebrate, but food is a fantastic way to provide a simple but meaningful treat on this special day.

Here’s 5 different ideas of food-based ideas you can gift or make for a loved one that will leave them feeling appreciated and well thought-of:

  1. Afternoon tea: Macarons, scones, sandwiches and more-who doesn’t love an afternoon drinking tea and enjoying a platter of beautifully presented treats.
  • Movie night: A more casual option, settle into your favourite comfort movie and enjoy your favourite snacks and hot chocolate. Maybe even some popcorn for the ultimate movie marathon.
  • Workshop: Looking for an exciting new experience? Booking a workshop, whether that be for cooking or even a chocolate masterclass can be an exciting way to learn new skills and eat some delicious food.
  • Breakfast in Bed: Why not treat them to some breakfast in bed? A cup of tea, toast and their favourite meal to start the day will leave them feeling relaxed and appreciated.
  • A special meal: nothing is better than having a new or favourite recipe cooked for you in the comfort of your own home.

In March, we finally start to see the first signs of spring, with daffodils blooming, clocks going forward and the lambs being born. What better time to enjoy Mother’s Day than with a special meal or even a picnic in the garden (weather dependent of course).

Did you know? The earliest history of Mother’s Day dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honour of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele.

At Inspire Catering, we believe food can be used to show appreciation to a loved one, with the thought, care and preparation involved. Food doesn’t need to be extravagant to be meaningful, it simply needs to have thought and kindness behind it.

Recipe: Classic Scones with Jam and Clotted Cream (BBC GoodFood)

This classic treat is a perfect Mother’s Day surprise for you or the family to bake.

Ingredients

  • 350g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 85g butter, cut into cubes
  • 3 tbsp caster sugar
  • 175ml milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Squeeze of lemon juice
  • Beaten egg, to glaze
  • Jam and clotted cream, to serve

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 220°C.
  2. Tip the self-raising flour into a bowl with ¼ tsp salt and the baking powder.
  3. Add the butter and rub it in until the mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in the caster sugar.
  4. Heat the milk in the microwave for about 30 seconds until warm (not hot). Add the vanilla extract and a squeeze of lemon juice.
  5. Put a baking tray in the oven to heat up.
  6. Make a well in the dry mixture, pour in the liquid, and quickly combine using a cutlery knife.
  7. Lightly flour a work surface and tip the dough out. Dust the dough and your hands with flour, then gently fold the dough over 2–3 times until smoother.
  8. Pat the dough into a round about 4cm deep.
  9. Dip a 5cm cutter into flour and press straight down into the dough. Repeat until you have four scones.
  10. Brush the tops with beaten egg.
  11. Carefully place on the hot baking tray and bake for 10 minutes, or until risen and golden on top. Serve warm with clotted cream and jam.
